What is your favorite part of being a mom?
My favorite part of being a mom is knowing what true unconditional love feels like for another human being, and the feeling of wanting to be the best person you can be. Living and experiencing the joy and simple things in life!
You're a mom to a girl and a boy, Is there a big difference between them?
I was lucky enough to have a boy and a girl. With a girl and Ella being the first it was easier for me because I was able to relate to her and knew what was going to be a result when she gets upset or how to speak to her when she is sad or needs my help. With my son Leo it is different because I was a little unsure on how he would react. It is a totally different approach. Their brains are just wired different. My daughter is much more social and in to sports and art, where my son loves art and is not so much in to sports. He is more calm and patient. They both play well together as they have a great compatible imagination.
You and your kids follow your husband everywhere in the US when he was racing. Do you have any tips for traveling with a toddler?
We have been traveling with our children since they were a very young age, they are little professional travelers, A few tips on traveling with a toddler would be to plan ahead on how to keep them entertained. Have snacks and water with you at all times. And with a smaller child to make sure to have PJ's and a duffel packed for when there are any delays!
Did you also travel when you were pregnant? What kind of tips do you have for traveling when you are pregnant?
When you are traveling while pregnant, make sure to stay hydrated and bring a healthy snack. Put your feet up when you can and get up and move around. Also, don't cross your legs. Keep your feet flat on the floor when sitting down.
Who are some moms you are inspired by?
I am inspired by my own mother and my sister. With my sister having a child before me she had thaught me a lot.
As a fashion mom, what have been your favorite pieces to wear while you were pregnant?
When I was pregnant I was lucky it was during the summer when I started to show, I loved wearing fitted long dresses, or just jeans and a t-shirt. It was challenging to find a great gown for some events.
You manage to look so fit after 2 kids, How do you maintain your shape?
I usually keep active and try my best to work out 3 times a week doing cardio, boxing and weight training.
Is Healthy food important for yourself and your kids? What is your favorite healthy snack or guilty pleasure?
It is very important to eat healthy for my kids and the whole family. A healthy start in life is the foundation to a healthy adult life. Teaching your kids to make the right choices with their food and explain why it is not healthy. Eating in moderation. I like to grab an advocate or an apple. My kids like some cut up cucumbers or an apple. Our weaknesses would be chocolate.
You are a Belgian girl from Limburg. Do you miss Belgium?
I moved away from Belgium when I was 16 years old. When I was living in Paris I would come home about every 2 weeks if my work schedule allowed it. Now that I have lived in the US for the past 24 years we have been able to have some nice family trips together. I do miss Belgium more now that I have kids. I would like to share my culture with them.
You have a passion for interior design and have a great taste/style. Where do you get your inspiration?
I have found my passion for interior design mostly by traveling the world. Spending time in amazing hotels and locations. It opened my mind to interior design and knowing more about art and beautiful furniture. I have decorated our homes we had in New York City, our beach house in Long Island and our full time home in North Carolina. I am working at the moment on a mountain chalet and the Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation www.jeffgordonchildrensfoundation.org offices.
You have a very busy life. What are some of your favorite ways to spend time together a s a family?
We have a busy life so it is important for us to slow down and relax. We love to play board games and laugh, bake together or be creative and work on some arts and crafts. As a family, we love to go to beautiful beaches and spend time skiing. We do have a passion to see the world. We like to discover all the cultures in the world. I believe that is the best way to understand other people, knowing where they come from and there background. Understanding that people are all races and colors and it is beautiful to all get along.
What do you hope your children learn from you?
I hope my children can learn my love for traveling and that it is important to treat others as you would like to be treated. To always look at a situation two ways to keep an open mind, to understand why people do the things they do and to be open to their thoughts and opinions.
Thanks Ingrid for your time and beautiful story!
